Overview

GEMS Institute of Higher Education (GIHE), the higher section of GEMS School, was established in 2008 with the prime objective of providing higher-level education from Pre-university to Master's level degree courses. Currently, it offers GCE A-Level, a prestigious program at Cambridge University, UK, and the Plus-2 in Science and Management affiliated with the Nepal Education Board (NEB), Government of Nepal.

The higher education facilities are located within the campus of the main complex of the high school at Khumaltar, Dhapakhel, 1.5 kilometers away from Satdobato, Lalitpur. It is a private educational institution in Lalitpur, Nepal.

GEMS Institute of Higher Education (GIHE) offers education up to the secondary level with moderate fee structures and a scholarship scheme for deserving students.

GIHE is committed to providing a high-quality international education.GIHE students have remarkably excelled in academics and extracurricular activities. Their excellent performance in the GCE (Cambridge Assessment International Education) and NEB (National Examination Board) examinations demonstrates our commitment to quality education.

Extra Curricular Activities (ECA)

At GEMS, students can participate in various co-curricular and extracurricular activities. Currently, the college offers classes in Swimming, Photography and Multimedia, Group Fitness/Zumba, Art and Design, Guitar, Basketball, Football, Futsal, Cricket, Tennis, Volleyball, Theatre and Drama, Badminton, Table Tennis etc., coached by national-level professional instructors.

Apart from the games and sports mentioned above, different clubs, such as Sports, Social Service, Literary and Journalism, Visual Arts, Research, IT, and Astronomy, have been set up under the ECA coordinator.

Various intra and inter-college competitions such as Science exhibitions, Debate competitions, Essay writing, Quiz, Games and Sports, Singing/ Music, Dance, GEMS Model United Nation sessions (MUN), Business Plan Competition, Symposium, Poetry, etc., are organized regularly to enhance the students' full potential. Besides this, students are also taken on domestic and international educational tours to foster a better understanding of cross-cultural similarities and differences. We have also introduced the Jane Goodall Foundation's "Roots and Shoots" program for community engagement.

The college is a member of the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award, the world's leading youth achievement award. The Award is open to all students aged 14-24, regardless of their background. It is about personal development and is not a competition with others. Participating in the Award gives young people formal recognition for their achievements, which many educational institutions and employers value. The Award also equips young people with practical and social skills valuable to their life and career development.

Excursion

Educational excursions are an integral part of the college program. They are significant because they allow students to learn through travel, interact closely with their peers and teachers, understand cross-cultural differences, and foster tolerance toward other cultures.

Clubs

GIHE strives to create a positive environment and enhance students' leadership skills by forming various clubs at the students' initiative and with the college management's logistic support. Students are recruited into different clubs at the beginning of the academic year and encouraged to organize competitions and events coordinated by the ECA in charge. Club activities are held after college hours, and interested students can participate as they please. The following clubs are on offer at present:

  • Performing Arts Club (Music, Dance, Theatre, Art and Design)

  • IT Club (Photography, Multimedia, Design, Computer Coding)

  • Sports Club (Football, Basketball, Cricket, Indoor sports)

  • Environment and Social Service Club

  • Literary Club

GIHE Student Council

GIHE Student Council is a student body comprised of student leaders representing the students currently studying in the college. Academic heads, coordinators, teachers, and students select the leaders for the executive positions of the council for one year. The main objective behind the council's constitution is to allow students to develop their leadership skills and instill a sense of responsibility by organizing many ECAs. The council members encourage other students to participate in the activities and help showcase their talents.

GIHE Youth Fest, Inter-College Football, and debate competitions are some of the essential events the student council organizes every year. Such events help students boost their morale and self-confidence and develop a sense of togetherness and team spirit.

GIHE has also been designated as a center for theory and practical examinations by the Cambridge International Examination (CIE), an examination board under the Cambridge Assessment.

Career Guidance and Counseling Facilities

At GIHE, students can consult a professional Counselor to discuss their problems. Occasionally, professionals from different fields, such as medicine, engineering, applied science, management, etc., and prominent alumni are invited to interact with the students and talk about their professions to help them decide on their future careers.

Overseas study counseling and the selection of career goals are yet other facilities students can avail themselves of during their studies at GIHE. Academic counselors guide students for admission to universities abroad, including the United States, the UK, Australia, and India. During the session, we also have several educational fairs conducted by USEF and the British Council. Many representatives of universities from the USA, UK, Japan, Thailand, India, etc. also visit to inform the students about courses, application procedures, scholarships available, etc.

Community Services

The college provides opportunities for students to engage in nonacademic pursuits, focusing on initiatives designed to help society. These may include voluntary teaching opportunities in community schools of the local village development committees or work with NGOs, INGOs, or government bodies, as per the students' desires and the opportunities available.

Transportation

The College bus service is available only from designated stops around the city. However, students must ascertain if the bus stop falls on the route and note the bus stop while filling out the application form if they want to avail of the bus service. Generally, the college bus picks up students from 5:45 am, depending upon their stops, and drops them off after 2:00 pm. Students getting into a bus designated with a written application from the parent and due written permission from the Transportation Manager will have the facility suspended or withdrawn. Students cannot use two-wheelers or self-driven vehicles while commuting to and from the college.

The college also offers a shuttle service to Satdobato and Lagankhel for students who finish their classes early or are required to remain after regular college hours for remedial courses or any prearranged programs, subject to the availability of buses.

Locker Facilities

Admission to the college only ensures locker facilities for some students. The locker facility is a service the college provides based on the request and the availability on a twin-sharing basis. Depending on the availability of lockers, the college management reserves the right to either accept or reject an application for the locker issue. The locker will be issued to a particular student(s) for one academic session only.

For the next session, students are required to resubmit a written application. Valuables (jewelry, mobiles, iPods, cash, debit cards, official documents) or any prohibited articles, etc., are strictly forbidden from being kept in the lockers. The locker user(s) will be given a key to the locker. The substitute key will be in the custody of the loffice.

The college management reserves the right to open any locker at any time for inspection. If a student loses the key to the locker, a fine of Rs.300/- (Rupees three hundred only) will have to be paid for the issue of a substitute key. If the student loses the key for the second time, they will have to vacate the locker and will not be allowed to apply for a locker again. Damage caused to any locker will be subject to a fine of Rs.800/- (Eight hundred rupees).
