Bachelor's in Data Science at Kathmandu University

Kathmandu University (KU) is set to introduce a groundbreaking undergraduate program in Data Science (BDSC), a first for Nepal. The Department of Mathematics under the School of Science will begin offering this four-year course in the next academic session.

Program Highlights

  • Integrated Curriculum: The 120-credit hour BDSC program combines Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, and Business Intelligence. The initial two years focus on computing, covering topics like coding, graphics, systems, networks, and databases.
  • Admission Requirements: Applicants need a minimum of 2.0 CGPA or 50% marks in their class 12th or equivalent exams. The program will accept up to 30 students per academic session.
  • Scholarships: Three scholarships will be awarded based on entrance exam performance, with an additional merit-based scholarship available each semester.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the BDSC program will be equipped to work in various roles within technology companies, including:

  • Data Engineer
  • Data Architect
  • Data Analyst
  • Data Scientist

Other potential career paths include machine learning, software development, and more. According to Prof. Dr. Ravindra Kayastha, head of the Mathematics Department, the program aims to address the shortage of skilled professionals in the IT sector by providing intensive training in mathematics and its applications.

The Value of Data in the Digital Age

Prof. Kayastha emphasizes that data is an incredibly valuable asset in today's digital world. Through the BDSC program, students will gain a deep understanding of data, its importance, and its practical applications.

Existing Programs

In addition to the BDSC, the Department of Mathematics at KU offers a range of technology-oriented programs, including:

  • Four-year Computational Mathematics
  • MSc in Mathematics and Statistics
  • MPhil in Mathematics and Statistics
  • PhD in Mathematics and Statistics

Kathmandu University's initiative in launching the BDSC program marks a significant step forward in preparing Nepalese students for the evolving demands of the global IT industry.
