Kathmandu University to Offers Mining Engineering Courses

Kathmandu University (KU) is all set to introduce mining-related engineering subjects to fulfill the shortage of mining engineers in Nepal. The university has announced that it will teach geology and mining engineering (mining engineering) at the undergraduate level for the first time in Nepal. The program will be for four years and will be launched in the next academic session.

Interest from Gandaki University

Gandaki University has also expressed interest in conducting the Geological Science and Mining Engineering subjects, which are about to be started by KU.

Objective to Launch Mining Engineering Program:

  • To address the shortage of mining engineers in Nepal by providing a comprehensive curriculum that covers all aspects of mining-related engineering at the undergraduate level.
  • To produce highly skilled professionals who can contribute to the country's mining industry by teaching students how to explore, extract, process, and ensure the quality of minerals for use.
  • To admit 30 students per year to address the shortage of mining engineers required in the mining and geology department of Nepal.
  • To establish a partnership between KU and Gandaki University to strengthen the education system and produce highly qualified graduates who can make valuable contributions to the mining industry.
  • To promote the development of the mining industry in Nepal and the Gandaki province by providing the necessary manpower to explore, extract, and process minerals.

Syllabus and Curriculum

KU has already prepared a draft syllabus for the four-year program, which will focus on teaching students how to explore, extract, process, and ensure the quality of minerals for use. Nepal is rich in minerals such as limestone, coal, red clay, granite, marble, coal, gold, and precious and semi-precious stones (tourmaline, aquamarine, ruby, and sapphire) needed for industry and construction.

Shortage of Mining Engineers

According to Pro. Dr. Bhola Thapa, Vice-Chancellor of KU, Nepal faces a shortage of mining engineers required in the mining and geology department. The university aims to admit 30 students per year to address this shortage.

The partnership between KU and Gandaki University

Gandaki University has entered into an agreement with KU to conduct geology and mining engineering subjects. The university aims to produce the manpower required for the mining industry as there is great potential for mining within the Gandaki province.

Overall, Kathmandu University's move to introduce mining-related engineering courses will help address the shortage of mining engineers in Nepal. The program's curriculum will focus on developing skilled professionals who can contribute to the country's mining industry. The partnership between KU and Gandaki University will also help produce the required manpower for the mining industry in the Gandaki province.
