Overview
Maharajgunj Medical Campus (MMC) was established in 1972 as one of the nine campuses of the IOM (Institute of Medicine). It has played a significant role in conducting academic programs to develop different categories of HRH (Human Resources for Health) in Nepal. MMC endeavors to build a competent and diverse workforce for Health. HRH, ranging from a Primary Health Care (PHC) worker to a Medical Specialist(MS) for rendering primary to tertiary health care in Nepal. MMC has taken a long march in the field of medical education in Nepal.
The establishment of TUTH (Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital) in 1983 clarified that imparting medical education requires a teaching hospital to facilitate teaching-learning activities effectively. With the establishment of TUTH, MMC obtained full status as the first medical school in Nepal. Since then, it has not only taken on the responsibility of providing quality medical education but has also begun to offer tertiary health care to everyone who comes to THTH. The faculty of medicine has played a dual role—that of a medical teacher and a medical specialist.
MMC was established when Tribhuvan University elevated the "Auxiliary Health Workers School" to campus status, initially naming it "Central Campus." It began by training allied health science professionals. In its continued pursuit of excellence in healthcare education, it gradually expanded its range of healthcare programs and progressed through the stages of the "Central Campus" and "Maharajgunj Campus," and has finally evolved into "Maharajgunj Medical Campus." MMC currently offers eight bachelor's programs, 25 master's programs, and 11 doctoral programs across various medical, dental, and allied health science disciplines, educating and training nearly 400 health professionals annually.
During its five-decade journey, MMC has produced countless competent and diverse healthcare workforces, ranging from primary healthcare workers to medical superspecialists providing expert services in all healthcare sectors in this country and abroad. It is truly a point of great pride to acknowledge that the alumni of this prestigious institute are now among the country's leading physicians and surgeons, exceptional public health professionals, innovative scientists, inspiring educators, and outstanding entrepreneurs. MMC has made great strides in healthcare education.
