Overview
Nepalese Army Institute of Health Sciences (NAIHS) is a non-profit medical education institution established in 2010 AD under the Welfare Fund of the Nepal Army. Its vision is to produce skilled and professional medical professionals by providing an optimal educational environment, focusing on improving the quality of medical services for the Nepali Army and the nation.
Founding and Governance of NAIHS
General Chhatra Man Singh Gurung (Retd), then COAS, laid the foundation stone of NAIHS in 2067-08-02 BS to ensure easy access for army children to medical education. The former Right Honorable President of Nepal, Dr. Ram Baran Yadav, inaugurated it on 10th Jestha 2069 B.S. (23 May 2012 A.D.). Today, the institution celebrates its annual day on the 10th of Jestha, and 2079 marks its 10th anniversary.
NAIHS is managed by the Directorate General of the Nepali Army's Directorate of Welfare Planning, with an advisory committee that includes all relevant directorates under the leadership of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS).
Courses and Quotas
NAIHS provides medical education to the children of regular and retired army personnel, those who have died in the line of duty, and fully disabled army personnel, as well as the general public, with the provision of fixed quotas. NAIHS currently offers 19 Post Graduate courses, 5 Bachelor level programs (MBBS, BSc Nursing, BNS, BPH, and BSc MLT), and 6 Diploma level programs (PCL Nursing - Staff Nurse, General Medicine, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Lab technology, and Diagnostic Radiology).
For the academic year 2078/79, NAIHS has been allocated MBBS-100, BSc Nursing-40, BNS-40, BPH-20, and BSc MLT-12 seats.
Future Plans
NAIHS aims to extend its Bachelor's level programs, such as BDS, B. Pharm., etc., Master's level programs, like MD/MS/MN, and super specialization (DM/MCh) programs, in the near future.
Shree Birendra Hospital: NAIHS' Teaching Hospital
Shree Birendra Hospital is the NAIHS teaching hospital located in Chauni, Kathmandu. The tertiary level, modern, central, and referral hospital of the Nepal Army currently has 635 beds. It provides almost all types of medical services to serving army personnel, retired army personnel, civilian faculty members, and staff of NAIHS and their dependents.
NAIHS has proven itself to be one of the premier institutes in health professions education in Nepal in the past ten years. The institution strives to encompass all health-related fields, addressing Nepal's existing medical, paramedical, and nursing health professionals.
NAIHS has a team of highly qualified and experienced faculty members dedicated to providing quality education to students. The institute has modern classrooms, laboratories, and advanced technology to facilitate practical learning and research activities.
