Overview

Overview of Ph.D. in Chemistry at Central Department of Chemistry, Tribhuvan University (TU), Kirtipur, Kathmandu, Nepal

The Ph.D. program offered by Tribhuvan University Institute of Science and Technology (IOST) is designed for individuals seeking advanced knowledge and expertise in the field of Science and Technology, specifically in Chemistry. The program aims to develop students' research and teaching skills while contributing to scientific theory and experimentation through original research.

Regulations and Time Requirement:

The Ph.D. program at IOST is regulated by the Research Committee (RC-IOST) under the supervision of the Dean, following the guidelines outlined in the Tribhuvan University Organization and Academic Administration Rule 2050, Chapter 3, Section 9. The program operates according to the following rules and regulations:

  • Full-time Researcher: Full-time Ph.D. researchers are required to submit their thesis after three years of registration. However, exceptional cases with substantial work and standard publications may be recommended for thesis submission after two years of registration. Failure to submit the thesis within five years of registration will result in automatic cancellation.

  • Part-time Researchers: Part-time Ph.D. researchers must submit their thesis within five years from the date of registration. The thesis must be submitted within seven years of registration; otherwise, it will be automatically canceled. This rule also applies to part-time researchers who enrolled before the amendment of Ph.D. program regulations in 2071. Full-time researchers are those who dedicate their time solely to research, taking leave from their job. Otherwise, they are considered part-time researchers.

Fee Structure:

The registration and monthly fees for part-time researchers are twice the amount of full-time researchers. Full-time faculty members of Tribhuvan University receive a 50% waiver on the monthly fee.

Re-Registration:

If a candidate has substantially worked but failed to submit the thesis within the prescribed time, they can request re-registration on the same topic with the same supervisor. Re-registration can be obtained by submitting a fresh application to the Central Department within a month of the previous registration's expiration. The candidate must submit the thesis within two years (for full-time researchers) or three years (for part-time researchers) from the date of re-registration. Failure to submit the thesis within the specified time will result in automatic cancellation. The fee for re-registration is double the normal registration period.

Pre-Submission Seminar:

Before thesis submission, candidates are required to present their research work in a pre-submission seminar organized by the Central Department Research Committee (CDRC). The CDRC evaluates the presentation and submits a report with recommendations to the Research Committee of IOST.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for enrollment and registration in the Ph.D. program at IOST, candidates must have secured at least a second division in M.Sc. in Chemistry from Tribhuvan University or any other university recognized by Tribhuvan University.

Admission Criteria:

Enrollment and registration for the Ph.D. program follow the below criteria:

  • The candidate must apply to the relevant Central Department where they intend to work on a subject related to their research.
  • Application forms, available from the Central Department of IOST, must be obtained by paying the prescribed processing charge.
  • Applications are typically available in January and July.
  • The application should include a research proposal, CVs of the candidate, supervisor, and co-supervisor(s), a list of publications, a recommendation from the supervisor, a no-objection letter from the employer, and an assurance letter of study leave (for full-time candidates).
  • The Central Department Research Committee (CDRC) evaluates the research proposal and application, and the candidate must defend the proposal to demonstrate their knowledge in the chosen field.
  • The CDRC certifies that the proposed subject can be pursued within the department or other relevant departments or research centers recognized by the Research Committee.
  • The application, along with the required attachments, is forwarded to the Research Committee of IOST for registration approval.
  • The Research Committee reviews the recommendation and informs the concerned parties, including the candidate, supervisor, and CD Head, about the decision within two months.
  • Upon approval, the candidate receives provisional registration from the Dean's Office for one year, during which they must demonstrate their research ability.
  • The title of the Ph.D. thesis is provisional at the time of registration and must be finalized six months before thesis submission, approved by the Research Committee after CDRC recommendation.
  • Interdisciplinary research candidates must fulfill additional requirements suggested by the CDRC before registration.
  • Upon registration, the candidate is required to pay the registration and other fees determined by the Research Committee of IOST until the final thesis submission.
  • Ph.D. students must attend courses and seminars organized by the Central Department Research Committee.
  • During the Ph.D. research period, the candidate is not allowed to enroll in any other degree program without the approval of the CDRC.
  • Violation of regulations or unsatisfactory progress may result in the cancellation of a Ph.D. candidate's registration.
  • The Research Centre for Applied Science and Technology (RECAST) can conduct Ph.D. programs under the research guidelines of IOST, forwarding applications and theses to IOST for approval.
