Overview

Master in Land Administration at Department of Geomatics Engineering Kathmandu University

Introduction to Land Administration

Land is fundamental to sustainable development, serving as the basis for achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Agenda 2030. Effective land administration is crucial for providing secure tenure, enabling efficient land markets, supporting land use planning, and managing land development. Land Administration is an interdisciplinary field that integrates legal, social, economic, technical, planning, and management aspects to address various land-related issues.

Globally, less than a quarter of the world's countries maintain a complete land administration system based on geo-information management. In Nepal, the need for an effective land administration system is critical, particularly as the country transitions to federalism. Strengthening the Land Administration system is a high priority for the Nepal government, necessitating a sufficient number of skilled land professionals to fulfill the mission of the federalist nation.

Program Overview

The Master in Land Administration program at Kathmandu University (KU) is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills required to design and apply responsible land administration solutions. This course is developed within the broad framework of land management and administration, with considerable emphasis on geo-spatial technologies and geo-information management.

Target Audience

This program is particularly suitable for mid-career professionals interested in addressing land-related issues in their professional work. It provides the necessary tools and knowledge to manage and solve complex land administration problems using modern geo-spatial technologies.

Curriculum and Course Structure

The Master in Land Administration program is offered on a semester basis, spanning four semesters. Each semester comprises 15 credit hours. The curriculum is structured to provide a comprehensive education in land administration, blending theoretical knowledge with practical applications.

First and Second Semesters

During the first two semesters, students are introduced to core concepts in land administration. The courses cover a range of topics, including:

  • Introduction to Land Administration: Fundamental concepts and frameworks of land administration.
  • Land Tenure Systems: Understanding different land tenure systems and their implications.
  • Land Policy and Legislation: Examination of land policies, laws, and regulations.
  • Geo-Spatial Technologies: Application of GIS, remote sensing, and other geo-spatial technologies in land administration.
  • Land Use Planning and Management: Techniques for effective land use planning and management.

In addition to these core courses, students can choose one elective course each semester, provided by the department/school, to tailor their education to their interests and career goals.

Third Semester: Problem Assessment Project

In the third semester, students undertake a 'Problem Assessment Project,' a 9-credit hour course. This project involves assessing a specific problem within their domain. The project component spans approximately three months of full-time work, including continuous evaluation and submission of a final report. Students work closely with their supervisors throughout this period. The project themes may include:

  • Industrial/Organizational Problem Assessment: Conducted within an industry or organization.
  • Community-Based Problem Assessment: Focused on issues within a community.
  • Literature-Based Problem Assessment: Based on extensive literature review, conducted at an academic institution.
  • Analytical or Experimental Problem Assessment: Involving experimental or prototype-based research, conducted at an institution.
  • Case Study-Based Problem Assessment: Conducted at a specific site, focusing on a particular case study.
  • Field Work-Based Problem Assessment: Conducted on-site, involving hands-on fieldwork.

Fourth Semester: Thesis and Prescribed Courses

The thesis, based on the outcomes of the problem assessment project, involves proposing solutions to the identified problem and validating or invalidating the hypothesis. This 5-month full-time thesis work is distributed over seven months, allowing for comprehensive research and analysis.

In addition to the thesis, students take two 'Prescribed Courses' in the third semester, recommended by their project/thesis supervisor and endorsed by the department. These courses are tailored to support the thesis research and provide specific knowledge required for the project. These can include guided courses, modular/seminar-type courses, and other courses directly related to the project or thesis work.
