Overview

Kathmandu University School of Law (KUSL) offers a 5 years full-time Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Law (BEc-LL.B) Programme .

The integrated Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Law (BEc-LL.B) Programme is the second undergraduate programme being offered by Kathmandu University School of Law (KUSOL). This course is being offered every February in addition to the existing integrated course on law and management, Bachelor of Business Management & Bachelor of Law (BBM- LL.B).

The legal component gives the same focus and strength in B.Ec-LL.B that has been given in the BBM-LL.B programme. It meets all requirements of the professional undergraduate degree or Legum Baccalaureus. The students will be trained for taking the bar exam and proving analytical ability in advising or representing clients in the court system as a lawyer. It will meet all the prerequisites necessary for a general legal practitioner. They will also be equipped for many other rewarding career opportunities. In the legal profession, the BEc-LL.B degree holders can become law officers, in-house advisers, legal consultants, or court officers. Graduates may consider working in public administration, real estate management, corporate business, taxation or consultancy services.

As an integrated course, the BEc-LL.B programme aims at creating a band of modern lawyers who are knowledgeable and skilled in the basics of economics as well. Law and economics as a single subject area is the economic analysis of law and its outcomes that sharpens the skills of a lawyer. The study of economics as part of legal education helps law students to benefit from the understanding of production, consumption, and transfer of wealth while working in the private or public sector.

Learning Outcomes

Through the completion of this course, we hope that students will be able to demonstrate the following skills:

  • Application and learning of substantive and procedural laws, as also the drafting of pleadings such as the institution of suit, etc and understanding of the legal setup.
  • identify and analyze, from a legal perspective, economic issues relating to business decisions and policy-making in order to make informed decisions;
  • demonstrate knowledge about local and international laws and socio-political perspectives in order implement research strategies for practical implementations; and
  • demonstrate the ability to apply legal principles to ethical issues, according to norms and standards, evaluate their effects, and suggest critical reforms and reevaluation where necessary, among others.

Through knowledge within the classroom and practical experiences outside, the program provides students an overview of the legal issues facing the economy in a rapidly changing environment. From a legal perspective, study of international laws will be emphasized along with Nepali laws so students are equipped to think critically about existing and future legal issues in Nepal. Along with communication and oral skills, students will also be taught and assessed in their abilities of legal research, writing, and argument, in collaboration with their classmates and independently as well. Students will be asked to identify problems and formulate and present solutions to varying legal and economic issues. In addition to economic and quantitative data, students will be asked to integrate qualitative information and research in their assignments in order to build upon their research, writing, and presentation skills. Ultimately, the program will enable students to overcome professional challenges, practice ethical judgments, and contribute to areas of social justice and equality in their communities and beyond.
