The College of Dental Sciences of KIST Medical College is one of the best schools in the nation with a sufficient number of specialists working as full-time faculty and dental chairs. The college has three major responsibilities: it offers quality dental care services with utmost comfort to the patients, a rich amalgamation of scientific inquiry and improvement of the dental care services, and educates the students for efficient management of the patient and design a good treatment plan utilizing the state-of-the-art techniques. The college is also concerned with the promotion of public health.

KISTMC has started a postgraduate program (MDS) since 2021.

Infrastructure

KIST has a complete basic infrastructure, such as lecture halls with audio-visual aid, preclinical dental lab, and functioning clinical departments with electronic dental chairs, as per the requirement of the MEC.

The dental curriculum reflects the four essential components of competency that have to be achieved by each BDS graduate.

They are:

  • Competent to provide curative services.
  • Competent to provide preventive services.
  • Competent to work as a manager.
  • Competent to handle medico-legal problems.

Curriculum Outline

The duration of the BDS course is four and half years, comprising of the first, second, and final phases with one year compulsory internship.

The first phase is of two years duration during which period anatomy; physiology, biochemistry, microbiology; pathology, and pharmacology are taught as integrated basic medical science subjects. Dental subjects include Dental Materials Science, Oral Biology, Community dentistry, Pre-clinical Prosthodontics & Preclinical Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics, and Pre-clinical Orthodontics & Pedodontics.

The second phase is of one year which includes major clinical teaching and postings. All dental subjects are taught along with General Medicine, General Surgery including Anesthesiology.

The final phase comprises of one and half year duration and during this period clinical posting in Prosthodontics, Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics, Orthodontics, Oral and maxillofacial Surgery, Pedodontics, Periodontics, and Community Dentistry is conducted. University Final Exams are conducted twice during this phase.

Academic Year: Yearly

Program Duration: 4 and half years plus one year of rotating internship.

Eligibility criteria for Tribhuvan University (TU)

Pass 10+2 Science (Biology Group) securing at least 50% separately in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology with 50% aggregate in total marks,  OR secured the percentage equivalent to the above eligibility in regards to the A-Level program with a different grading system.

Selection Procedure:

The first phase (2 years duration) covers basic clinical sciences including anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, forensic medicine, and community medicine. Part of community medicine continues in the second phase as well.
