Overview
Nepal Ayurveda Medical Council (NAMC) is an autonomous body that regulates and controls Ayurveda medicine. Established under the Ayurveda Medical Council Act, 2045, the council oversees Ayurveda courses, human resources, institutions, practitioners, and traditional healers in Nepal.
All Ayurveda practitioners and educational institutions must register with the council. The council has developed a code of ethics for Ayurveda doctors and set minimum requirements for Ayurveda educational institutions to ensure the quality and safety of Ayurvedic medicine in Nepal.
The council's main committee consists of an Ayurveda doctor nominated by the government as chairperson, three doctors nominated by the government, the Director of Ayurveda (DoA), three doctors elected by registered doctors, one campus chief nominated by the government, and one registrar nominated by the government. This committee manages the council's activities, including the registration of eligible Nepali practitioners.
Foreigners who wish to practice Ayurveda in Nepal must be provisionally registered with the council for one year at a time. This ensures that foreign practitioners meet the necessary requirements to provide safe and effective treatment.
NAMC's main functions include registering Ayurvedic practitioners, standardizing Ayurvedic education and practice, and accrediting Ayurvedic colleges and institutions. It also has the authority to investigate complaints and take disciplinary actions against practitioners who violate the code of ethics.
To practice Ayurveda in Nepal, an individual must be registered with NAMC and hold a valid license. The council also conducts exams for Ayurvedic practitioners and issues certificates to those who pass.
NAMC has been crucial in regulating and promoting the practice of Ayurveda in Nepal. The council ensures the quality and safety of Ayurvedic medicines and treatments and provides a legal framework for the practice of Ayurveda in Nepal.
By setting standards for educational institutions and practitioners and developing a code of ethics for doctors, NAMC ensures that Ayurveda in Nepal is safe, effective, and upholds the values of this ancient system of medicine.
History
The Nepal Ayurvedic Medical Council (NAMC) was established in 1982 as an autonomous body to regulate and control the practice of Ayurvedic medicine in Nepal. At that time, Ayurveda was not recognized as a mainstream form of medicine in Nepal, and practitioners were not subject to any regulations or standards.
To address this issue, the government of Nepal passed the Ayurveda Medical Council Act in 2045 BS (1988 AD) to establish the NAMC. The council was given the responsibility to regulate and control Ayurvedic courses, human resources, institutions, practitioners, and traditional healers in Nepal. This move was a significant milestone in the history of Ayurveda in Nepal, as it recognized Ayurveda as a legitimate form of medicine and provided a platform for its practice and development.
Since its establishment, the NAMC has been working to develop and implement standards and guidelines for the practice of Ayurvedic medicine in Nepal. The council has developed a code of ethics for Ayurvedic doctors and minimum requirements for Ayurvedic educational institutions. The council’s main committee is made up of representatives from the government, Ayurvedic practitioners, and educational institutions. The committee is responsible for ensuring that the council's policies and regulations are being properly implemented and that the quality and safety of Ayurvedic medicine in Nepal are maintained.
Over the years, the NAMC has played a vital role in the growth and development of Ayurveda in Nepal. The council has helped to increase awareness and understanding of Ayurvedic medicine among the Nepali public, and has provided a platform for the education and training of Ayurvedic practitioners. Today, Ayurveda is widely practiced in Nepal, and the NAMC continues to work towards promoting and regulating the practice of Ayurveda in the country.
