To enter the teaching service of Tribhuvan University, individuals must pass a qualification test conducted by the university.
Tribhuvan University revises entry qualifications for teaching services, requiring a new eligibility test and Ph.D. for Kirtipur campus faculty. New measures aim to support disadvantaged students and improve campus management.
This test, called the 'University Service Eligibility Test,' allows only those who pass it to participate in another exam for entry into the teaching service. As stated by the university's chief academic officer, Dr. Khadga KC, only those who pass this test will be eligible to enter the teaching service at the constituent, affiliated campuses, and departments under Tribhuvan University.
According to him, the university currently conducts this exam by establishing its own structure. However, Dr. KC informed that once the National Eligibility Test (NET), which is currently being studied by the University Grants Commission, is implemented, this system will automatically become inactive.
However, this test will not be required for individuals who wish to teach at the university as guest lecturers. Additionally, teachers appointed, transferred, or positioned at the university campus in Kirtipur must have at least a Ph.D.
Currently, the minimum educational qualification to enter the teaching service at Tribhuvan University is a postgraduate degree. Those who score the highest marks in the open competition exam announced by the university can choose their desired campus and department based on merit.
However, individuals without a Ph.D. will not be allowed to teach at the university campus. These proposals were approved by the general assembly (senate), which was held on Thursday and chaired by Prime Minister and Chancellor KP Sharma Oli.
The university has indicated that these matters will be formalized and implemented. The Senate Meeting also passed a policy to employ students to meet the manpower needs of the university's central bodies, central departments, departments, and campuses and to support students from economically disadvantaged classes and regions.
The Senate Meeting also decided that private campuses operating under the affiliation of Tribhuvan University can merge with community campuses, community campuses can merge with other community campuses, and private campuses can merge with other private campuses. According to this arrangement, campuses outside the valley cannot merge with those inside the valley. Still, campuses inside the valley can merge with those outside the valley, provided the merged campus does not remain within the valley.
Dr. KC stated that this arrangement is expected to uplift campuses on the verge of closure due to a lack of students. The Senate Meeting also approved other policies and programs for Tribhuvan University's fiscal year 2081/082.
