National Examination Board Reports Over Half of Students Fail SEE

The National Examination Board has announced that more than half of the students who took the Secondary Education Examination (SEE) in 2080 failed. Only 47.86% of the total examinees passed, while 52.14% received non-graded (NG) results.

These NG students are currently ineligible for immediate enrollment in Class 11. However, the board will conduct a grade improvement exam for those with NG in one or two subjects.

Implications and Responses

Deepak Kafle, Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, highlighted the need for significant reforms in the education system. Kafle, who is also the Vice Chairman of the Board, announced that a meeting will be held soon to discuss changes in the examination system, including question paper design.

New Grading System

This year, the board introduced a new grading system with seven groups ranging from GPA 3.60-4 for high achievers to NG for the lowest scores. Students were assessed on a scale of 75 marks for theoretical exams and 25 marks for internal assessments.

Subjects with High NG Rates:

• Mathematics: 177,985 students
• Science: 126,933 students
• English: 101,383 students
• Social Studies: 73,877 students
• Nepali: 69,532 students
• Economics: 69,416 students
• Optional Mathematics: 20,352 students

Notably, no student received NG in internal assessments across any subject. In previous years, SEE results combined theoretical and internal assessment scores, resulting in higher pass rates due to high internal assessment marks provided by schools.

Official Statements and Future Plans

Dr. Mahashram Sharma, Chairman of the Board, noted an increase in the number of students achieving higher grades compared to previous years. The SEE exams were conducted from Chaitra 15 to 27.

Grade Improvement Exam

The board has scheduled the grade improvement exam for Shrawan 16 and 17. Approximately 115,834 students will participate, including 48,038 with NG in one subject and 67,796 with NG in two subjects. Successful candidates will be eligible to enroll in Class 11.

Re-evaluation Process

Students dissatisfied with their SEE results can apply for re-evaluation within 15 days. Applications for re-evaluation can be submitted online, according to Board Chairman Sharma.
