Introduction of Tamang Language Education in Chitwan's Rapti Municipality

Starting this academic session, schools in Chitwan's Rapti municipality will introduce Tamang language instruction. This initiative targets schools with a significant number of Tamang students, aiming to enhance their learning experience by teaching in their native language.

Teacher Training Program

To ensure the successful implementation of this program, the municipality, under the leadership of Mayor Shamsher Lama, has initiated teacher training in the Tamang language. Both Tamang and non-Tamang teachers have been trained to conduct classes in the mother tongue, ensuring all students can benefit from this program.

Addressing Language Barriers

Mayor Lama highlighted the language challenges faced by Tamang students in certain wards. Many students struggle with comprehension when taught in Nepali. To address this, classes will be conducted in the Tamang language, making it easier for students to understand and engage with the material.

Collaborative Efforts

This initiative follows an earlier interaction between Rati Municipality and Nepal Tamang Ghedung Rapti, where discussions focused on local language policies and the mother tongue of the Tamang community. These discussions included school principals, public representatives, heads of various branches, education committees, and social organizations, all aiming to preserve the Tamang language and address linguistic challenges faced by students.

Program Implementation

  • Initial Phase: Tamang language classes will begin in grade 1.
  • Number of Schools: The program will be implemented in 10 schools in the current academic session.
  • Future Plans: Chepang language classes will be introduced in schools with a high Chepang population starting from the next academic session.
  • Total Schools: Rapti municipality has 49 community schools.

Conclusion

The introduction of Tamang language instruction in Rapti municipality is a significant step towards addressing the educational needs of Tamang students. By teaching in their native language, the municipality aims to improve comprehension and academic performance, ensuring that all students have equal opportunities to succeed.
