Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s Directive for Enhancing Life-Skills and Quality Education

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has issued a directive to the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, calling for the creation of a detailed action plan aimed at ensuring life-skills and high-quality education across Nepal.

Focus on Technical Education and Skill Development

In a recent discussion held at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Prime Minister Oli addressed pressing issues within the education sector, proposed solutions, and outlined specific actions to be implemented within the next 100 days. He emphasized the importance of dedicating 70% of the educational focus to technical education.

  • Skill-Based Workforce: Prime Minister Oli highlighted the necessity of producing a workforce equipped with practical skills. He noted that without such skills, even the most educated individuals may struggle to find employment. He urged the Ministry to prioritize the development of a skill-based education system.

  • Moral and Ethical Standards: The Prime Minister also emphasized the importance of cultivating a workforce with high moral standards, capable of positively contributing to society. He called for the formulation and implementation of policies that align with these goals.

Improving Enrollment and Educational Quality

Prime Minister Oli stressed the need to increase school enrollment rates, reduce dropout rates, and enhance the overall quality of education. He expressed a strong interest in ensuring that at least 70% of students pass the upcoming Secondary Education Examination (SEE).

  • Utilization of Capable Teachers and Technology: To achieve this goal, the Prime Minister directed the Ministry to select skilled teachers and prepare for the integration of online classes through free internet access. He underscored the importance of leveraging technology to improve educational outcomes.

Clarification on University Policies and Programs

Addressing concerns raised during the recent Senate meeting at Tribhuvan University, Prime Minister Oli clarified that he had agreed to pass the necessary grace list and budget based on thorough discussions with university officials. He dismissed allegations of interference in policy and program matters, explaining that the policies and programs had been provided to him just a day prior, leaving insufficient time for review. He assured that another Senate meeting focused on policies and programs would be scheduled soon with the agreement of university officials.

Promoting Science and Technology

Prime Minister Oli emphasized the critical role of science and technology in driving national development and directed the Ministry to develop comprehensive programs in this area.

  • Health and Security: He called for initiatives to ensure citizen health security through purity tests and certification, in line with the concept of a disease-free Nepal.

  • Poverty Reduction and Agricultural Advancement: The Prime Minister also encouraged efforts to reduce poverty and enhance the use of science and technology in agriculture and industry.

Key Officials in Attendance

The discussion was attended by several high-ranking officials, including Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel, Education, Science, and Technology Minister Vidya Bhattarai, Chief Secretary of the Nepal Government Liladevi Gadtoula, and Secretaries Dr. Deepak Kafle and Bishwobabu Pudasaini.
