The local government of Parbat district is trying to gradually implement the local curriculum. Phalewas Municipality is preparing to provide textbooks based on the local curriculum to schools for the upcoming academic session.
Jaljala Rural Municipality is also working on the development of the curriculum by forming a working group. Some local governments have reported on the progress of the curriculum development, while others are preparing internally.
Kushma municipality, the headquarters of Parbat district, has started the process of creating a local curriculum for the first time and can serve as a model for other local governments.
Bishnu Prasad Tiwari, the head of the education branch of the municipality, said that the first phase of the orientation program has been completed among teachers, experts, public representatives, and municipal employees to gather stakeholders and prepare the curriculum based on their suggestions. They have gathered suggestions regarding the topics, knowledge, skills, concepts, and objectives to be covered by the local curriculum through interactions between curriculum experts, public representatives, and employees. In the upcoming academic session, textbooks for classes one to three will be available for students, but due to a lack of budget and a short period of time, it will not be implemented up to class eight in the new academic session. The plan is to implement it up to class eight in the 2081 academic session.
After reaching an agreement with the experts, the initial draft of the syllabus will be prepared, and the stakeholders will be consulted on the draft. Education officer Deepak Subedi said that after revisions based on the suggestions made during the discussion, the process of writing the textbooks will begin.
The curriculum has been suggested to cover subjects such as local cultures, languages, lifestyles, religious places, tourist areas, herbs, wildlife, rivers, minerals, local professions, agriculture, household tools, positive hospitality, service organizations, local sports, food, Jharfuk customs, Katuwal customs, etc. Tiwari said that there are approximately 2500 students in the municipality at the basic level who will have the opportunity to study textbooks based on the local curriculum gradually starting next Baisakh.
Mayor Ramchandra Joshi said that work has been done to prepare the format of the curriculum through curriculum experts, language experts, and technical and educational experts. He expressed his commitment to making the local curriculum practical and useful for life, rather than being ritualistic.
It is believed that the local curriculum will benefit the community by giving priority to local needs, increasing the capacity for curriculum development and implementation from the local level, making the implementation process easier for those involved, facilitating the adoption process, utilizing local resources and means, and strengthening the relationship between parents, teachers, students, and school administration.
