Kathmandu Metropolitan City Upscales Quality in Community Schools

Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is actively investing in its community schools to improve their educational quality. Spearheaded by Sitaram Koirala, the Head of the KMC Education Department, these initiatives aim to make community schools equally appealing for students and parents when compared to private schools.

Key Initiatives

  • Physical Infrastructure: Schools in need of infrastructural improvements are already on the path to renovation.

  • Student Enrollment: Special focus is being placed on schools with lower enrollment rates to boost their numbers.

  • Upcoming Education Policy: KMC is on the brink of introducing a new education policy to induce positive changes in the educational sector.

Current Scenario

A total of 89 community schools operate under KMC, out of which 59 are secondary schools, and the rest cater to basic education. Some schools like Janakalyan Secondary School and Shivpuri Secondary School have already become models of good physical infrastructure and quality education. These schools have reached full capacity, reflecting the growing interest in community education.

Future Plans

  • Expansion: With the surging interest in public schools, KMC is considering the possibility of establishing additional community schools in the coming years.

  • Quality Education: The end goal is to provide all community schools with state-of-the-art facilities and an education system that rivals private institutions.

Financials

In line with their dedication to education, KMC has earmarked an impressive Rs. 1 billion, 320 million, nine lakhs, and 33 thousand rupees for overall educational improvements this fiscal year.

Compliance and Regulations

All operations of these schools are being conducted as per the current Education Act, 2028, Education Act, 2075, and the School Management Regulations, 2074.

Why This Matters

  • Equal Opportunities: KMC’s initiatives aim to offer students an equal opportunity for quality education, regardless of whether they attend a private or community school.

  • Building Trust: Through improving infrastructure and education quality, KMC aims to build trust among parents about the capabilities of community schools.

  • Social Equity: The upgradation of community schools promotes social equity, enabling children from all backgrounds to have access to quality education.

In summary, Kathmandu Metropolitan City is setting the stage for a revolution in the education sector. With focus on quality, infrastructure, and policy change, KMC is well on its way to leveling the playing field between community and private schools.
